Dotty for the Dresden
OK Remember that little Obsession I have spoken of before?
Material Obsession….Well yes…this one is also part of that.
Mine looks a bit different than the book because let’s face it….it needed to have a bit of “Charisma” flavor added to it.
The pattern in the book is called “Dotty For Dresden”
So to make the dresdens I used the cheater method they explain in the book….They have a template that you can copy and cut out to me your dresdens..I decided to go down to my local glass place..they made me a template from plexiglass for like 3$. It made the process of cutting them out so much easier. Then I spent time sorting my scraps..picking scraps that appeal to me..LOL…which you see here in all their glory.
Second I wanted to add dimension..so I added the yo-yo’s in the center of the dresdens…then I thought well it can’t stop there. So instead of appliqueing those big circles in-between the blocks I thought I would just sew on bigger yo-yo’s in-between while I had it on the frame. It was not easy…but I think it was easier than trying to hand sew them on such a big quilt. So I did hand sew on the ones in the center of each dresden. I can’t say my hand sewing skills are the greatest..so it isn’t a “show” quality quilt..but it is a HAPPY quilt ..which is what I LOVE!
I experimented with the border design..I can’t say I love it..or that I would do that again either….but my border design is so big and beautiful ..I knew it would be ok to experiment because it’s not all that noticeable anyway..and it’s my quilt..so I can experiment. I really just wanted to leave my blades plain because I love them so much..they didn’t need anything added to them..so I SID. It was close to midnight when I finished last night..I was getting a bit hazy…but I wanted to finish. So in some seems that could have been better ..overall it’s good enough for me. I love the little border design though..also wonky in some areas..whoever will see it will know it was freehand..bonus..LOL all in all…I love my HAPPY DRESDEN…..it has been in the making for some time.
Wow, Charisma, these quilts are beautiful. Dresden plate is definitely on my list to make as soon as I get caught up with customer quilts. I love the yo yo’s. The center circles of most plates patterns are too large and out of proportion in my opinion, so I will be copying your idea of putting yo yo’s, buttons, or something in the center. The other two quilts are just as lovely.
Love this quilt!! I am going to be following Bunny Hill who is doing a dotty Dresden!! Yours is fabulous!!
I love love LOVE this! You make me want to make one for my god daughter!
